What is the Workplace Charging Scheme?

The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is a special grant that is available to businesses to help with the cost of installing electric vehicle chargepoints for staff and can be worth up to £10,000 in some cases.  There is a grant of £500 per chargepoint for up to 20 sockets per business and is available for any business, charity or public authority that qualify.

The grant comes from the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) who also provide a grant for homeowners to help with charging costs.  It reduces the cost of installing a single station by 75% and is capped at £500 per socket.  You do need to be adding these as you can’t claim for chargepoints already installed.

To qualify for the scheme, you must have sufficient off-street parking for the charging stations.  You may not have the vehicles yet but as long as you are planning to purchase them, this will be okay.  And lastly, you need to use an OLEV-approved workplace charging station installer such as EV Ready to qualify for the grant.

The application process is simple.  You apply online and if you are successful, there is a voucher sent via email to provide to your installer when the work is being done.  This lets them claim the money after the installation is complete.  The voucher is valid for 120 days from when it is issued.
